Houston Methodist has performed over 10,000 organ transplants!

Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center operates one of the nation’s largest and longest standing kidney transplant programs, performing more than 200 organ transplants annually.

Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center has more than 50 years of experience providing kidney transplants.

The kidney transplant team includes surgeons, doctors, pathologists, nurses and other health care professionals who manage each patient’s case from evaluation through transplant.

Transplant is the best option for the long-term, and it adds quality years to the patient's life.

Living donor kidney transplant is the first line of treatment for kidney failure.

Houston Methodist, encourages patients to find living donors.

Living donor transplant patients can be transplanted the soonest and with the best results.

We maximize the number of lives saved through multiple paired donation programs, in which a willing living donor can initiate a chain, or series of “swaps,” allowing patients who don’t have a matching living donor to get a transplant.

Following a transplant, patients start producing urine almost immediately! – (Some while still in the operating room) — and they do not require any further dialysis!

When compared to dialysis, most patients feel that a kidney transplant allows much greater freedom and increased energy levels.

Patients return to their normal lives, keeping as healthy as possible and living their best lives.

Four reasons all patients are encouraged to find living kidney donors:

1. No need for dialysis.

2. It’s safe for the donor. Thousands of living donor transplants are performed successfully each year! Again, thousands per year! There is no increased risk for living donors to experience kidney disease in the future, and living donors actually have a slightly higher survival rate than the general public.

3. Living donor kidneys last longer. Patients with living donors have better outcomes, with their transplants lasting twice as long as deceased donor transplants.

4. Eliminate the long wait. A living kidney donor allows the health care team to plan for surgery, often reducing the waiting time to months rather than years!

You can be a living donor!

Almost any adult can be considered for living kidney donation, if he or she is in good health.

While most donors are donors giving to a family member, loved one or acquaintance, some people become altruistic, or good Samaritan, donors by giving a kidney to anyone on the waiting list who is a match.

At Houston Methodist, our goal is to ensure our living donors' health, safety and interests at all times. Living donors receive extensive education, undergo complete medical evaluations, and are assigned an independent living donor advocate to prioritize their needs.

Any healthy adult can become a living kidney donor.

Adults of all ages can be donors.

People of any blood type can be donors.
